The SAFE Project (Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic) works to combat the addiction crisis by providing solutions and support across communities, campuses, workplaces, and the military. Their focus includes prevention, education, harm reduction, and recovery efforts to address substance use and the rising number of overdose deaths. They also offer resources such as treatment locators, recovery tools, and harm reduction strategies like Naloxone training.

The overdose crisis is complex and individual school and campus approaches vary widely. Some schools/campuses model overdose response for their communities, others stand firm in distancing themselves from risky student substance use. Our efficacy in addressing substance use and overdose is often frustrated by the rapidly changing landscape of risk and resources. In this session, presenters will share key updates and resources to help navigate the overdose crisis in 2025, and the role of opioids and polysubstance use within this context.

Substance use and mental health professionals in our schools are in a challenging position. As crises emerge, trends call our attention, and priorities repeatedly shift, staff must be nimble as budgets and bandwidth rarely grow alongside rises and evolutions in student need. Especially when considering implementing new programming that touches on stigmatized topics such as substance use, overdose, and recovery, it takes a village to confront our campus, school, and community culture. In this session we will discuss the dynamics of silo-ing, resource challenges, and the role of partnerships in unlocking new opportunities. Resources for overdose prevention, recovery allyship, and student recovery program development will be shared.
