National Prevention Week 2023
This week, May 7th-13th is National Prevention Week. This initiative, started by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, aims to increase public awareness of, and action around, mental health and/or substance use disorders.
National Prevention Week has 3 main goals:
- Increase Community Involvement: Raise awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues within communities
- Foster Partner Engagement: Foster engagement and collaboration between federal agencies and national organizations with the same goals
- Share Resources: Provide quality substance use prevention and mental health promotion resources and programs
National Prevention Week occurs in May because substances are most often used for the first time during June and July. This makes May a good time to reboot prevention efforts. Schools can remind students as they’re heading into the summer break the dangers of substance abuse and how to get help if you find yourself in trouble.
